Huge fine to Poste Italiane: it's harassing consumers

A fine of 4 million from the Antitrust and another of 12,5 million from the Privacy Guarantor

Italian post

Poste Italiane continues to collect fines for its highly unfair behavior toward consumers.

  • THEAGCM (Antitrust) fined Poste Italiane (approximately 4 million euro) because the use of the BancoPosta and PostePay apps is considered a “aggressive” commercial practice. In practice, users had to accept access to a lot of smartphone data in order to use the apps, with no real alternatives.
  • In parallel, the Privacy Guarantor imposed a much higher fine (over 12,5 million euros) for the excessive processing of personal data, deemed unnecessary for fraud prevention.

The Privacy Guarantor had already started investigations and investigations into Poste's apps and digital services (in particular BancoPosta and PostePay) in 2024, especially for:

  • amount of data requested by apps
  • consent and access methods
  • use of data for security and anti-fraud purposes

Poste Italiane is a company listed on the stock exchange, which answers to its shareholders and the market, and it is not required by law to be more "virtuous" than other companies, but since it's state-controlled, a higher standard of protection and transparency is expected. Not the other way around.
