Abrasive sponges are a microplastic factory

Commercially they call them "magical" because of how well they clean. But at home, when you use them, they're a powder keg of plastic fragments, which are very polluting. Abrasive sponges are A typical product of the universal disposable industry, they are very effective for household cleaning: they clean well and effectively remove dirt from pots, plates, pans, and even stovetops, sinks, and encrusted kitchen surfaces. But it is precisely these good results that make them one of the most polluting objects in our daily lives, true eco-bombs: according to an American study of 2024, published in the magazine Environmental Science & Technology,  a single abrasive sponge can release approximately 6,5 million plastic microfibers for every gram of sponge consumed during useA mini-environmental disaster when cleaning the house with decidedly dangerous materials.
The mechanism by which abrasive sponges clean (well) and pollute (in a frightening way) at the same time is easy to explain, starting from the most used material for this product, that is, the melamine, a chemical compound that, when combined with formaldehyde, forms a hard and resistant resin.
The surface of disposable melanin sponges (not surprisingly sold as  magic eraser, magic sponges) works like a very fine sandpaper, it scrapes the dirt, even the most difficult encrustations, and eliminates it, but at the same time it wears out, and while cleaning it flakes off, releasing the deadly microplastics In the environment. In theory, disposable sponges should be changed continuously, at least every two weeks, to reduce their environmental impact, but this too would be a huge waste, not only in terms of pollution, which, although reduced, would still be present, but also in terms of the money spent to replace these "magical" key tools for our household cleaning.
In another study from 2025, published in the journal Nature, The second catastrophic aspect of disposable sponges is demonstrated: up to 54 billion bacteria reside in just one centimeter of these sponges.
 But are there truly sustainable, non-polluting alternatives to abrasive sponges made with melanin? Here you find a series of possibilities, all easy to make, some even at (almost) zero cost, by recycling sweaters, jute, socks. Then there are models that have a decidedly less impact than abrasive sponges, such as those based on loofah or coconut fiber.
