Artificial intelligence can help stop book speculation.

New editions of textbooks are constantly being released, even in the face of small changes. And the cost of school textbooks for families is ever-increasing.

how to save on school books
It took the Antitrust Authority to do something schools could already be thinking about, to stem the tidal wave of speculation in schoolbooks and their new editions. It works like this: with the trick of "new editions" appearing every year to replace old textbooks, families find themselves with increasingly expensive bills to pay for schoolbooks for their children and grandchildren, and the kids' backpacks continue to grow in size. The result, considering skyrocketing prices, is an average cost per student, for books alone, of €580 in middle school and €1.250 in high school.
The Antitrust Authority, denouncing this outright speculation after conducting a fact-finding investigation into the school textbook sector, has provided recommendations that families and students could implement to bypass new purchases. Using artificial intelligence, instead of purchasing the new edition and being unable to sell the old one, students (in this case accompanied by their families) can rely on artificial intelligence to update the learning content of the old textbook, without necessarily having to buy a new edition.
In practice, artificial intelligence can be used, with school textbooks, to:
  • extract, organize and update digital content from a manual in a modular way;
  • generate teaching support materials (summaries, concept maps, flashcards, quizzes) linked to official texts;
  • make content easier interoperable between platforms (i.e. using the same digital content on different devices and apps).
    This can help to reduce dependence on new paper editions when the changes are minimal, and only result in a waste of money.
