Garcinia cambogia is one of the most widely used ingredients in a variety of dietary supplements that promise rapid weight loss. It has always been considered a controversial substance due to its contraindications and side effects. But now, from France, an independent and authoritative source has issued a formal ban on the sale of these products: the French National Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Safety (ANSES).
In practice, ANSES advises against consuming Garcinia cambogia-based dietary supplements, including well-known brands sold on the market, such as Herbalife and Kilocal. The supposed slimming properties of Garcinia cambogia are linked to the hydroxycitric acid (HCA) present in the plant's fruit. However, side effects have led to cases of liver damage (38 cases in France alone), psychiatric effects, pancreatitis, heart problems, and muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis). Cases of liver and heart damage have also been reported in Italy, and research by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and La Sapienza University has investigated the interactions between Garcinia cambogia and Montelukast, a widely used asthma medication. Currently, in Italy, following reports of side effects, the Ministry of Health has requested that the wording "IMPORTANT NOTICE: if any disorders arise following use of the product, for example affecting liver function or the central nervous system, stop taking it and consult your doctor”.
It remains to be seen what changes will occur in Italy following this initial intervention by the French National Agency. The regulatory body intends to conduct further research and studies to decide whether to move from a recommendation not to buy Garginia cambogia products to an outright ban. This, if it were to happen, would be a crucial step for Italian food safety regulators.
