Making civil service mandatory is a good idea to train good citizens.

Young people could contribute to the functioning of those services that neither the state nor local authorities are able to manage properly anymore: from garden maintenance to street cleaning. And they would have a unique civic education experience.

importance of the national civil service

IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL CIVIL SERVICE –

I didn't do military service: as a boy, I lived and studied in Naples, and after the earthquake of November 1980, a general exemption from military service was introduced, which was later abolished. I don't think I missed much. Today, however, I don't mind the idea (even the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, mentioned it) of introducing a compulsory civil service like military conscription once was.

COMPULSORY CIVIL SERVICE –

Would be An important and useful signal. For everyone, not just young people. These kids could find themselves, as many already do, living a unique experience, also very educational, in the very lively days of our volunteers who work alongside the State and local authorities and often act as actual substitutes. An experience that, at a later stage, could also become a job opportunity.

NATIONAL CIVIL SERVICE EXPERIENCE –

We would see young people busy cleaning squares, streets, parks, beaches, or helping with border services, from the Civil Protection emergency response team to the daily and often silent work of the Red Cross. Young Italians and young immigrants, who could thus integrate and get to know each other better. And together, they could honor and respect the laws and customs of civil community life in our country.

We have, cynically, demagogic, and even barbarously, destroyed the excellent tradition we had in the field of civic education. The results are evident in our mistreatment of places, cities, and spaces that should belong to everyone, and in how community relationships have deteriorated, often to the point of hatred and social envy among individuals.

VALUE OF THE NATIONAL CIVIL SERVICE –

To introduce Compulsory civil service would also mean rebuilding a shared basis of civic education, civic passion, and participation in public life. (today obscured by the discredit that parties and the political class have now accumulated in incurable doses, in the short term). It would mean give a good chance to be good citizens and good Italians, perhaps with a stint in civil service also completed abroad.

And I'm sure that young people, the vast majority of young people, would respond enthusiastically, or at least with interest, to this change. This is demonstrated by the high participation of young people in some areas of volunteer activity and the fact that the civil service, currently voluntary, has many more requests than there are available positions. Young people are ready, so why not help them in this exciting challenge to real life?
