Twenty state-owned properties will become cohousing facilities and community spaces

A call for proposals that begins to stop the enormous waste of unused and abandoned public buildings.

Every now and then, something moves in the silent jungle, crowded with unused and completely wasted public and state-owned buildings. If they were reclaimed, they would be an important part of a truly modern housing plan.

The State Property Agency has opened a tender to assign 20 state-owned properties, currently abandoned and out of use.

The list includes a wide variety of properties: lighthouses in Sicily, former monasteries, historic buildings, former prisons, former barracks, and other public buildings spread across various Italian regions. Some will be granted with development concessions , others with temporary use , while two are earmarked for concessions at a preferential rate for non-profit organizations registered with the RUNTS (National Institute for the Management of the Italian National Statistics) , with terms of up to 50 years.

Possible destinations include:

  • cultural and community spaces (cultural centers, artistic activities, event venues);
  • structures for sustainable and accessible tourism (for example lighthouses, historic buildings or properties in valuable areas);
  • social services and third sector projects;
  • spaces for training, inclusion and social innovation;
  • housing or reception solutions where compatible with the property and the territory.

Giuliano Modena (MO); Former Forcola del Braulio Barracks – Bocchetta di Forcola Valdidentro (SO); Punta Cavazzi Lighthouse – Punta Cavazzi – Ustica Island (PA); Gelso Lighthouse – Vulcano Island, Municipality of Lipari (ME); Punishment Cells – Favignana (TP); Riposto Lighthouse – Riposto (CT); Former Judicial Prison – Gallina, Reggio Calabria (RC); Nappi House – Loreto, Ancona.
