A melon, diced and packaged in plastic, costs three times as much as a loose one, and it pollutes much more for obvious reasons. For the same product , packaged fruits and vegetables tend to cost more because they incorporate the material (plastic), packaging, processing, logistics, and cutting of the product. For example, in the case of bagged salad, prices have been observed up to five times higher than those of loose salad. But is all this really worth it for the consumer?
