The Garden of Wishes, a park on the outskirts of Milan designed for children

In the popular Corvetto neighborhood on the outskirts of Milan, a project saw elementary school students design and build their own spaces. Led by the school

The Garden of Wishes, in the popular Corvetto neighborhood, on Via Ravenna, near the Fabio Filzi primary school in Milan, has a peculiarity that makes it unique:  It was designed directly by children, together with teachers, parents and local associations. And although it is owned by the municipality, it is managed by a series of volunteer associations in the area. It includes various activities: a football pitch and a basketball court (with a floor made with large designs), a safety fence, swings and play areas, cracks decorated with golden resin on the base of the kintsugi technique.

The goal was, from the very first moment, simple but innovative:

  • create a space “child-friendly”,
  • starting from their desires, needs and ideas,
  • and involving the community in caring for the place.

From the Fabio Filzi school to Italia Nostra, from neighborhood sports clubs to local cooperatives: a broad array of entities collectively manage this precious space. It's just a little infuriating to think that a Garden of Wishes in Milan actually exists only in Corvetto, where it finally represents a place not suited to a city for the wealthy. Yet it should be replicated in all the neighborhoods on the outskirts of the metropolitan area.
