In the heart of Milan, at Via Santa Croce 15, the fifth solidarity hub against food waste has been inaugurated, located at the Ibva Association. This new center joins others already active in the municipalities of Isola, Lambrate, Gallaratese, and SogeMi, all of which are part of the municipal Food Policy launched in 2015. Milan's solidarity hubs operate according to a B2B (business-to-business) model, receiving surplus food from supermarkets and company canteens. The collected goods are then distributed to those in need through organizations such as Banco Alimentare, the Red Cross, and Caritas. In 2021 alone, these centers recovered over 170 tons of food, equivalent to 340 meals distributed.
The new hub on Via Santa Croce is equipped with refrigerated storage and shelving for dry goods, managed by volunteers who organize the distribution. Some deliveries will be made by So.De – Social Delivery, an association that uses cargo bikes and electric vehicles, reducing the environmental impact of its operations.
