How to stretch tight shoes so they don't go to waste

A hair dryer with hot air. Thick socks. Or two bags of water and then the shoes in the freezer.

how to widen tight shoes
Tight shoes, perhaps due to an unwise purchase, risk becoming a waste if they become unusable. However, with simple and effective methods, you can stretch them (you'll have to see if it's enough...), without going to the shoemaker, who can do little good. From a hair dryer to thick socks, to even using bags filled with water to put in the shoes and then leave them in the freezer overnight.

The hair dryer

The method of pshe It is one of the most used to widen leather or imitation leather shoes because it uses heat to make the material softer and more malleable. Turn the hair dryer on medium-high temperature and point the air at the parts that are tightest on you (toe, sides, heel), keep the hairdryer at about 10–15 cm away for 20–30 seconds per area. While warming up, bend your toes, push your foot forward, and apply pressure to tight areas: all this helps the shoe "memorize" the new shape. After warming up, continue wearing them for 10–15 minutes as they cool down.

The double socks

If your shoes are not particularly tight, before using other methods, try to stretch them out by wearing some socks. socks double what you would wear in the shoes in question. Walk in them a bit, and you might even be able to make them more comfortable. It will be uncomfortable at first, but that's the point: the shoe is forced to expand slightly. Start with this method gradually, which takes time to work—about 30 minutes a day, then work up to 1-2 hours. As you move your foot, the leather or fabric softens, and the shoe adapts to the larger last: it should be fully usable again after 4-7 days.

Water bags

Fill some food bags with water and place them inside your tight-fitting shoes. Then, place the shoes in a bag and freeze them overnight. The water inside the food bag will freeze, and the ice will expand, stretching the shoe. Finally, remove the shoes from the freezer and let them air dry thoroughly.

Do not force the water bags out immediately and leave them at room temperature for at least 10–20 minutes.

Try the water bag method with canvas shoes too, but never with suede ones.

Shoe trees

Insert an adjustable shoe tree and let it act for 24–48 hours: a precise and safe method, especially for quality shoes. Unlike a hair dryer or freezer, here the force is mechanical and constant, therefore more precise: the expansion is slow but controlled.

How to soften shoes that are too hard

Sometimes your shoes feel tight, and you struggle to put them on, but in reality they are simply too hard. How to soften them? The simplest and most effective systems are three:
  • Especially if the shoe is made of leather, you can use an oil. Rub it with a cloth over the entire shoe and let it act for half an hour
  • A solution with water and alcohol, in the same proportion. Again, wipe it with a rag and let it dry. This should also allow you to gain a few millimeters in width.
  • A good lather. You will have achieved two goals in one fell swoop: cleaner, softer shoes.
