A hat is an excellent solution for protecting yourself from the sun, both for heatstroke and for overheating. However, it's important to choose the right material, wear it well, and, if necessary, don't forget to always combine it with sunscreen. And if necessary, use it with sunglasses : a hat reduces direct sunlight, while sunglasses with UV protection protect the eyes and the skin around them.
Materials
The most suitable are natural: thick cotton (canvas or twill) , comfortable and breathable, but protects better if the fabric is thick and tightly woven. Lightweight cotton offers less protection than technical fabrics. Linen,
- Fresh and very breathableIdeal for warm climates, but generally offers less UV protection than technical fabrics or tightly woven cotton. Palm trees, especially those sourced from Ecuador for the famous Panama hats, are excellent for protecting yourself from the sun, while also adding a touch of elegance.
- Choose the right size: a hat that is too loose can move in the wind, while one that is too tight can be uncomfortable if worn for long periods.
Colors
Darker colors (blue, black, dark green) tend to absorb more UV rays than very light colors, generally offering slightly greater protection. Light colors (white, light beige, yellow) reflect more visible light and some solar radiation, but some UV rays can pass through the fabric more easily, especially if it's thin. If you have to choose between a blue hat and a white one for the summer, definitely opt for the blue one.
There's just one downside to consider: dark colors absorb more solar energy , so a hat can get hotter than a light-colored one. For this reason, on very hot days, many people prefer hats made of light-colored technical fabrics with UPF certification, which maintain good comfort without sacrificing protection.
How to wear it
To use a hat as sun protection, it's important to wear it so it offers maximum shade: first, place it with the brim facing forward, protecting your forehead, eyes, and part of your face from direct sunlight. Adjust it so it fits snugly on your head without being too tight, so it doesn't move in the wind. If the sun is very high or you spend a lot of time outdoors, choose a hat with a wider brim or a neck guard, as a standard cap leaves your ears, the back of your neck, and the sides of your face exposed.
Finally, combine it with sunscreen on the exposed areas of your skin, such as your face, ears, and neck.
When it is essential
A sun hat is especially important when your head and face are exposed to the sun's rays for extended periods. While not always essential, it's a very useful protective measure in many situations.
It is especially recommended:
- During outdoor activities during the sunniest hours, such as walking, hiking, running, or cycling.
- At the seaside or in the swimming pool, where water and sand reflect some of the UV rays, increasing exposure.
- In the mountains, because the intensity of UV rays increases with altitude.
- While working outdoors, for example in construction, agriculture, gardening or maintenance.
- During sporting or recreational events, such as games, concerts, camping or picnics.
- When you spend a lot of time on the boat, as water reflects the sun's rays and can intensify their effects.
- For those with little hair or a shaved head, because the scalp is more exposed to the risk of sunburn.
- For children and people with particularly sensitive skin, which may be more vulnerable to damage from UV rays.
