Protecting the sea: Worldrise network targets 30 percent Marine Protected Areas

An association of young people. With many projects to save our Mediterranean. Among these is educating children about how to collect plastic on the beach.

protect the sea

With the young and for the young. The horizon of Worldrise Onlus It's all geared towards engaging the new generations, with a network inspired by the idea of protecting the health of the sea. Today, more than ever, it's threatened by the climate emergency, the loss of biodiversity, from plastic pollution, from overfishing and illegal fishing. From acidification and deoxygenation. These are problems that certainly need to be addressed with political decisions (and not with the usual, generic good intentions for a more sustainable world), but even our small daily actions can make a difference. And we can all contribute, for example, through the projects implemented by Worldrise.

HOW TO PROTECT THE SEA

For protect the seaWe must first understand where we stand and how much wealth we risk wasting with our own hands. In fact, about half of the oxygen we breathe comes from the sea, and it is the same seawater that absorbs 25 percent of the carbon dioxide. Therefore, the sea is like the trees on the earthFundamental to the entire balance of the planet. Protecting it means taking action, as in the case of our Mediterranean, populated by 17 species that must be protected individually. Here we have two problems to address: the temperature, which in some areas has reached a record high of 31 degrees, and the spread of microplastics, now approaching ten kilograms per square kilometer.

THE 30×30 PROJECT

Among the many Worldrise projects, the most ambitious is entitled 30 × 30: to succeed, that is, to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) covering 30 percent of our seas by 2030, a crucial year also for the deadline of the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development. Establishing a protected area, which can have different levels and gradations, is never easy. There are legitimate interests, alongside illegal ones, that deserve to be listened to and protected: consider the activities of small-scale fishermen or the delicate balance, in some areas, between land protection and tourism opportunities, which require non-predatory use of the sea.

MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

To ensure the seriousness and feasibility of its marine protected area project, Worldrise has deployed many young professionals, some of whom are not yet graduates, led by Mariasole Bianco, president of Worldrise Onlus and specialized in Marine Protected Area Management, and Virginia Tardella, vice president of the Onlus. To advance the project and oversee its various stages, Worldrise has created the 30×30.it website. This reminds us of the starting point of this ocean crossing: since 2012, Marine Protected Areas along the Italian coast have not reached 10 percent of the sea surface. This target must be tripled.

BATTI5 PROJECT

Il Batti5 project Instead, it is aimed at children, and so far over 2 have been involved in eight Italian regions. The goal is simple: to encourage them to fall in love with the sea and acquire the sensitivity needed to protect it, especially through their lifestyle choices. The project is organized in three phases. In the first, several sessions are held. lessons on the characteristics of plastic, its uses and abuses, and the damage it can cause. The second phase takes action: children collect plastic from beaches and realize just how much there is. Everywhere. Phase three: creative recycling. Through creative recycling, plastic collected from the sea is reused and even transformed into works of art. At the same time, however, children explore alternative materials and uses for plastic objects. This is the most effective way to avoid this waste.
