How to grow forsythia even in a pot

Beautiful yellow flowers appear on young plants before the leaves. The greatest danger to the plant comes from birds.

FORSICE

Forsythia is a deciduous shrub with a spreading, bushy appearance and erect branches. These plants are known for their early spring flowering and beautiful, deep yellow flowers, which, in one-year-old plants, appear before the leaves . The most common species are Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima, from which some interesting hybrids also arise.

HOW TO GROW FORSYTHIA

Forsythia, named after botanist William Forsyth, can be grown even in extreme temperatures. The plant is very hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -15 and even -20 degrees Celsius in winter, and temperatures above 35-40 degrees Celsius. Forsythia can be grown on a balcony in wide, tall pots, but its ideal location, given its bushy shape, is the garden.

EXPOSURE AND CLIMATE

Forsythias are highly cold-hardy and thrive in bright locations, although they will tolerate partial shade.

SOIL AND CULTIVATION CARE

They adapt to any soil, but prefer soft, humus-rich, well-drained soil. The roots should be kept cool in summer by mulching.

WATERING

They require abundant watering, especially during the warm season. In winter, if there are no particularly dry periods , you can also reduce watering to a minimum, always checking that the soil is not too dry, almost arid.

SOWING AND FLOWERING

Propagation occurs by cuttings in summer and autumn. Flowering occurs in spring. The flowers are almost always yellow, but there are also species of forsythia with white, red, or pinkish hues. The red flowers have the same characteristics as the yellow ones, while the white flowers are star-shaped. After flowering, the plant should be pruned by cutting the branches back about two-thirds of their length.

POT CULTIVATION

Potted cultivation requires particularly well-draining soil, along with coarse aggregates, which are essential for the plant's health. If space is limited, you can choose a dwarf forsythia variety, with plants never exceeding one meter in height. Repotting should be done every two years.

PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES

Forsythias are very hardy plants and therefore generally immune to serious pest attacks. Their worst enemy are birds, which are highly attracted to the flowering buds: the best remedy is to protect the plant with special netting.
