A mania. A wasteful use of technology, useless for parents and children and harmful to the school system. This is what the phenomenon of the multiplication of mothers' groups which, through Facebook, WhatsApp e various chats, they besiege the schoolsAnd they even end up sparking fights between women. As happened on March 21, 2024 in front of a school in Scampia, the well-known suburb of Naples. Here the momsFrom a WhatsApp group, after a lively online discussion, they met to settle the score. Insults, shoves, punches, kicks: in the end, seven of them were reported to the Carabinieri.

MOTHERS' GROUPS

The numbers are impressive. If you search on Google Facebook mom groups you will get 24 million 400 thousand results; if the search is WhatsApp groups for moms the results reach 7 million 420 thousand; and finally the online search on Chat between mothers and school brings to 4 million 390 thousand results.

It goes without saying that there is something useful about this medium and this mode of communication between parents. Especially when the school system is grappling with all the problems of the long-term effects of Covid-19. But the compulsive use of this tool, the bad habit of viewing the internet as an outlet for every negative thought, and the blurring of hierarchies and roles in schools have led to the transformation of mothers' online groups, acting as saintly protectors of their poor children, students tortured by manic teachers, into multi-headed monsters.

MOTHERS' GROUPS ON WHATSAPP

We have read, trying to delve deeper into the roots of the phenomenon, of moms who with lucid self-criticism have decided to leave these groupsAnd they always did it for the same reason: not to participate in a form of delegitimization of schools via the Internet. Monica Tonelli, the manager of a multinational, even wrote a book on the subject, entitled Mom left the group (Book Sprint editions) where he tells the mania and obsessions which circulate, like a virus, through groups of mothers on the Internet.

And we read the curious story of Gigi Littaru, mayor of the small municipality of desulo, in the province of Nuoro. With a playful provocation, Littaru signed a fake ordinance to ban the use of any group of mothers gathered to comment on school activities. "I wanted to draw attention to a devastating problem for schools as they reopen. That is, the ongoing, and unjustified, pressure from families on teachers and school administrators, which certainly doesn't help foster a peaceful atmosphere in the classrooms..." says Littaru.

In fact, the mothers who monopolize Facebook and WhatsApp groups are of two types, both of which cause enormous waste. In the first case, they belong to the universe of helicopter parents, of mothers prisoners of a form of hyper-control of childrenFor them, technology is a dream never realized in real life, yet now possible: to exercise control over their children 24/7, all day long. And to pepper it with the most fleeting, futile, and therefore pointless worries.

A mother sparked a never-ending debate over the fact that her son had come home with scratches for two days in a row. Based on this incident, she suggested that other mothers request cameras from the school, including in the classroom. The tragic aspect of this story is that the helicopter mom, committed to her crusade against scratches, found widespread support among her colleagues. And none of them, amid the torrent of comments, pointed out a small detail: all children, absolutely all of them, have had the unfortunate fate of finding themselves with scratches at some point during their school years. But this is no reason to panic.

Helicopter moms demand up-to-date information on everythingHow to handle masks. What are the worst risks for Covid-19. And at this point, what do we do if some... louseThe explosive mix of this nonstop communication is made up of three ingredients: school gossip, fake news, and alarmism. You can imagine what comes out of this combination of factors. And in fact, one of the most shared comments among parents who love hyper-controlling their children concerns the fight against vaccines. moms' chat and school are very widespread in the people No vaccines, as in the various circles of universal conspiracy theories.

The second type of school group mom is instead obsessed with her own personal battle against the school where her son studies, against teachers and first of all against the principalEvery occasion is good for hammering and to insultThe school lunch pasta is overcooked, the son has come home with his eyes red from tears, failing his Italian exam is an injustice, the boy's exuberant personality is part of his strengths. The web's passionate women never have any doubts, they live immersed in their resentful certainties, and they manage to do only one thing very well: give yet another blow to the school system. Where respect for the authority of a teacher and a principal is reduced to zero. With the consequences we know.
