A promising packaging innovation to reduce food waste comes from India. India, remember, is the world's second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables, with 40 percent of produce lost before reaching consumers' tables. This amounts to approximately $12 billion in waste annually. And the project is GreenPod Labs.
GREENPOD LABS CREATES PACKAGING THAT SLOWS THE RIPENING OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Startup GreenPod Labs has created bags for fruit and vegetables that release plant-based volatiles that activate a protective mechanism inside the produce.
In practice, thanks to this innovation, fruits and vegetables grow much slower and become perishable over a much longer period of time than normal agricultural products.
They can be exported more safely, thanks to a slowing of microbial growth. And thus, food waste should be significantly reduced.
