Forests, 10 million hectares are lost every year with a significant loss of biodiversity

This is what emerges from a UN report. Since 1990, approximately 420 million hectares have been lost due to land conversion. This emergency has been slowing in recent decades, but much remains to be done.

FOREST BIODIVERSITY

Le forests worldwide I am seriously under attack. This is revealed by the latest edition of the relationship UN on the 'State of the World's Forests', according to which since about 1990 420 million hectares have been lost due to the conversion of the land to other uses. As a partial consolation, the deforestation rate in the last thirty years is decreased but not enough to let our guard down.

FOREST RISKS

The study was conducted byFood and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), for the first time in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) and with the technical contribution of the Conservation Monitoring Center, which is headed by United Nations Environment Programme (Unep-Wcmc). And it was published on the occasion of the World Biodiversity Day May 22nd. This anniversary is particularly important to remember in these times: the coronavirus emergency has taught us how crucial the conservation and sustainable use of nature are.

FOREST DANGERS

Every year,, despite the slowdown in deforestation in the last decade, approximately 10 million hectares di forests due to conversion to agriculture and other types of land use. “Deforestation and forest degradation – we read in the preface of the report – continue to occur in alarming speeds, which contributes significantly to the ongoing loss of biodiversity.”

FOREST BIODIVERSITY

And it is about a inestimable lossForests contain approximately 60 different tree species, 80% of amphibian species, 75% of bird species, and 68% of mammal species on Earth. Just this year, the goal of protecting at least 17% of the Earth's forested area was achieved, but there are still necessary efforts to ensure the representativeness and effectiveness of this protection.
