Food is not wasted, in Alba 300 families receive leftover food from nurseries and the municipality

A project that, with the help of Caritas, involves children, families, and volunteers. An ideal format to combat food waste in school cafeterias (€360 a day).

school canteen costs in Italy

The title alone deserves an award: «Food is not wasted!». Clear, strong and simple words in their essence. But the strength of the project created in Alba, putting together, around the same table and to the same goal (recovering wasted food in canteens public and in particular in school ones), public and private, school and municipality, consists in having built a network. A broad, very broad network, in the spirit of solidarity.

ALBA FOOD RECOVERY

The mechanism is simple in its organization, although when it comes to putting words into action it is not always easy, if professionalism and generosity are lacking. Three primary schools in Alba (Umberto Sacco, Gianni Rodari and Michele Coppino) are fully involved in the recovery of food leftovers in the children's canteens. Let us remember, the site Non sprecare has often talked about this, that waste of food in schools in Italy is truly one scandal of gigantic proportions: 360 thousand euros every day, represents the total amount of money spent and wasted on school canteen food that then ends up in the garbage.

SCHOOL CANTEENS FOOD RECOVERY

So the schools of Alba are involved in the project "Food is not wasted!", three. Along with them, there are teachers and families who are working to recover food that would otherwise end up in the garbage, and here lies another aspect of true sustainability: improve relationships between the various school stakeholders, relationships today are truly reduced to a bare minimum.

TO KNOW MORE: School canteens: in Finland they are free and made with local products. Zero waste.

They are the children, for example, who even helped to put on the shelves of the Emporio Solidale of Alba, managed by the Caritas (another key player in this game) the food recovered in schools. At that point, available to over 300 needy families, homeless and homeless, Italians and immigrants, there are food products recovered from the schools. Food that is distributed by volunteers from the Emporio Solidale and Caritas. Not only that. The other source of the "Food is not wasted" project is the municipal administration canteen, managed by a private company, the Sodexo, which is part of the network set up in Alba. And a significant quantity of products also comes from here, which can then be recovered in the assistance circuit for poor"This is just a first model, which we want to extend to other schools in the city, and perhaps ensure that it is imitated elsewhere," he explains. Elena Di Liddo, Councilor for Social Policies of the Municipality of Alba. Yes, Non sprecare is also this: a great community and an extraordinary cross-fertilization of good practices that we can all implement.
