The company Flessobags, based in Viterbo, It is number one in Italy for the production of biodegradable bioplastic bags.

In particular it produces:

  • Biodegradable and compostable shopping bags (also in bioplastic such as Mater-Bi)
  • Paper bags (also for food use)
  • Plastic and bioplastic coils
  • Food packaging (e.g. food bags, food wrap, trays, containers, etc.)
  • Customized packaging for shops and industries

A typical example of Flessobags products are shopping bags for supermarkets: according to industry estimates, around 1000 of them are sold. 9–10 billion bags per year for fruit and vegetables and second packaging.

The production process is as follows.

It starts from biopolymer granules, eg:

  • PLA (polylactic acid)
  • starch-based mixtures (e.g. Mater-Bi or similar)
  • additives for strength and weldability

These materials are:

  • mixed (compounded)
  • additives to obtain elasticity, resistance and controlled degradation times

The result is the “granule ready for transformation”

At this point the granule is:

  1. melted in an extruder (approximately 200°C)
  2. pushed through a circular head
  3. inflated with air → a “bubble” is created
  4. cold
  5. crushed in a thin plastic film in reels

This is the raw material of the shopper.
