Where it is
Its main sources are:
- Algae: Some marine species contain compounds similar to retinol.
- Green leafy plants: some contain carotenoids and other precursors of Vitamin A.
- Vegetable oils: in particular oils rich in natural vitamin A or its derivatives, such as carrot seed oil or rosehip oil.
Difference with retinol
Collagen production
Phytoretinol stimulates the skin in a similar way to retinol , increasing collagen production so that the skin becomes firmer. Dead cells are shed faster, making the skin smoother and brighter, and phytoretinol can improve elasticity and reduce fine lines.
However, compared to pharmaceutical retinol, the effect is slower and less powerful : it takes weeks or months of consistent use to see visible results. On the other hand, it is a natural product that doesn't stress the skin and almost never causes redness or irritation.
Phytoretinol has a beneficial effect on skin, even combination and oily skin , as it can regulate sebum production. This also applies to sensitive skin, which may be intolerant to synthetic retinol.
Finally, it can have a brightening effect on the skin, eliminating blemishes and making it more luminous. In fact, it has an antioxidant effect which, combined with cell turnover, makes the skin tone more even and luminous. It also reduces the appearance of blemishes that appear with age, but also with incorrect and excessive sun exposure.
How and when to use it
The best time to use phytoretinol is in the evening, as with all products containing vitamin A, also because it is sensitive to the sun. If you use it during the day, you should always use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
This is the procedure to use it at its best:
- Cleanse the skin: gentle cleansing without harsh soaps.
- Light toner or moisturizer (optional): If your skin is sensitive, you can apply a light layer of moisturizer first.
- Phytoretinol:
- Small amount (pea-sized for face and neck).
- Spread evenly, avoiding eyes and lips.
- Final hydration: a nourishing cream helps reduce any dryness or redness.
Controindicazioni
Phytoretinol , like synthetic retinol, also has some contraindications. It can cause dry skin (for which there are excellent and effective natural remedies), with mild redness, and make it more sensitive to UV rays. It should not be used on acute eczema, wounds, sunburn, or active dermatitis.
Phytoretinol , like synthetic retinol, is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
