Making an exchange for clothing seems simple (“I’ll take a different size”), but for stores it is one of the most expensive and complicated operations to manage, and this leads retailers to discourage exchanges.
The difficulties arise from several factors together:
- Low marginsMany items have low margins. Returns or exchanges add additional handling costs.
- Sizes not very standardized: an M from one brand can fit like an S or an L from another. This greatly increases the exchange rate.
- SeasonalityClothing loses value rapidly. If an item returns late, it may no longer be worth selling at full price.
- Complex logistics: the product must be returned, checked, registered, put back into stock and redistributed. N
- Head Conditions: it's important to check that it hasn't been used, washed, or damaged. Even small marks can make it unsellable.
- Fraud and abuseSome people buy clothes to wear them once and return them ("wardrobing"). This is why many stores are tightening their procedures.
