Women excluded from Cortina's "regolieri." A slap in the face for gender equality.

EXCLUSION OF WOMEN AMPEZZO RULES –

Every day we hear some sermon, all Italian, about the waste of women's professional qualities, and of their work in general. They tell us that with more women in employment, there would be a leap forward in the country's economic growth (the kind everyone is waiting for to emerge from the tunnel of a damned Great Depression), as well as true gender equality. And we know—the numbers speak for themselves—how much women in Italy still face discrimination in the workplace, in terms of wage differences compared to men and less access to top management, to the power of private companies and the public sector. Now we discover that in the highly civilized Veneto and in one of Italy's richest towns, Cortina d'Ampezzo, women are even excluded from fundamental rights. And rightly so.

The proposal to give women in Cortina d'Ampezzo equal status to men in the ancient city institution known as the Ampezzo Rules, approved in the late Middle Ages, was rejected . The Assembly rejected the requested amendment to the community regulation and also rejected the recognition of the title of consort with full rights for women and young people.

WHAT DO THE AMPEZZA RULES PROVIDE FOR –

According to the institution's regulations, the women of Cortina d'Ampezzo cannot manage land and forest properties, a right reserved only for men . Only in the absence of brothers are daughters granted this "privilege." However, Regoliera women lose all rights if they decide to marry a man from another community, a forester, or a non-Regoliera family. Without the permission of the "chiefs," women cannot even decide to cut down a tree or cultivate a field.

THE WOMEN'S PROTEST IN CORTINA D'AMPEZZO –

To protest the Ampezzo Rules and the failure to recognize the equal rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the women of Cortina d'Ampezzo wore burqas, denouncing the fact that in this popular Italian tourist town, time has stood still since the Middle Ages.

THE CASE OF THE COSTALTA REGULATION IN VENETO –

The recognition of full rights for women, a historic step, was taken by the Assembly of Costalta di San Pietro di Cadore in Veneto . Gender distinctions were completely eliminated and it was decided to double the number of regolieri.
