- Solidarity shops in Italy They continue to grow and now represent authentic strongholds, scattered throughout the territory, in the fight against poverty. They are similar to small supermarkets, But with two major differences: they are not open to the general public, but only to families and individuals experiencing financial hardship who are referred by social services, or by volunteer associations dealing with social hardship, or even by the same organization that created the Solidarity Emporium; there are no purchases, but products (food and basic necessities, personal hygiene and household items) are sold. they are distributed free of charge or upon payment of symbolic amounts.
Furthermore, the solidarity shops are also local outposts against food waste, as they receive and collect surplus and donated food, all perfectly edible, which would otherwise end up in the garbage.

History of Solidarity Stores
Solidarity shops were born in Italy in the early 2000s as a concrete response to the growing poverty, which increased significantly with the Great Crisis of 2008. The first was theSolidarity Emporium di Parma, inaugurated in 2009 Thanks to the collaboration between Caritas, volunteer associations, and local institutions, similar, albeit less structured, experiences already existed in some local communities.
Where are the solidarity shops located?
The solidarity shops then spread throughout Italy, there are currently over 250, They are mainly concentrated in the central and northern regions (there are over 40 in Emilia Romagna alone), and they distribute products to nearly 400 people a year. There is no complete national mapping of solidarity shops, but they can be easily found through regional websites.
