CaressesScratching, petting, cuddling: cats are pets that love our affectionate attention. But not all over their bodies, and not always. Typically, favorite spots are under the chin, on the chest, and at the base of the tail. However, it's the cat who will show its appreciation or rejection with very clear gestures that you should always respect. A word of caution about the proper approach: when petting your cat, always approach slowly and from the front, giving it a chance to sniff your fingers before touching it.

Head

Start from the neck and chin, where the jaw connects to the skull, with very gentle scratches. Then move up toward the ears, towards the base and outward, over the head and back. Finally, move toward the muzzle, towards the cheeks, without ever touching the whiskers. If the cat presses toward your hand or sticks out its muzzle, it's happy to be scratched.

Back

The lower back is a very sensitive area for cats, although not all enjoy being touched there. Scratches on the chest are very welcome, but not on the belly: cats are predators and defend their vital organs.

Tail

Avoid petting up and down the tail. And carefully focus on its base. If the cat starts slapping its tail, even sideways, it's a sign it's not appreciating your petting and you should move on.

Legs

Generally, cats don't enjoy being touched on their paws. It's a different story with their paw pads, where a simple massage has an immediate relaxing effect on the cat and improves blood circulation. Their most likely reaction, in this case, is purring.

If the cat raises its tail

  • He licks his nose insistently
  • He starts growling or hissing
  • The tail moves in jerks
  • The ears flatten against the head
