Exercise is beneficial for everyone, even those with diabetes who find it more difficult to exercise. However, exercise schedules vary, and for those with type 2 diabetes (a disease that affects 38 million Americans), it's especially important to exercise in the late afternoon.

An recent revision published on Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, summarized by the Washington Post, reached the following conclusions, which are very important for all people who have to deal with diabetes:

  • Training in the late afternoon or evening tends to improve blood sugar control more than in the morning
  • Morning exercise, in some studies, may be less effective or even associated with higher blood sugar levels immediately after activity.
  • The main reason would be the so-called “dawn phenomenon” (morning hormone spike that increases blood sugar, particularly high early in the morning)

In general, some people find late afternoon convenient also because:

  • you've already eaten during the day,
  • the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia is reduced in certain cases,
  • the body is more “active” than in the early morning.
