Why Depression Increases (VIDEO)

Depression in Italy now affects approximately 12 percent of the population. Statistics show that the increases are more pronounced among young people (including adolescents) and women, particularly those between 30 and 40. Fortunately, however, the number of treatments and ways to treat it is also increasing.

why depression is on the rise scaled

Why is depression on the rise? Why, given so much attention people pay to wellness and physical care, are mental health issues on the rise? There's no single answer to these questions, but rather several hypotheses that therapists at various levels and researchers have been working on for some time. First, statistics show that the increases are more pronounced among young people (including adolescents) and women, particularly those between the ages of 30 and 40.

Depression cases on the rise

Among the factors that could explain the increase in depression there are also the long-term effects of the post-pandemic of Covid-19. And yet: depression is struggling to be recognized, diagnosed, and treated. Less than half of people suffering from what the World Health Organization calls "the disease of the century" decide to confront the problem and begin addressing it with real treatments.

Depression and cancer

An important line of medical research is seeking to better identify the side effects of depression. This condition is no longer considered solely a mental disorder; through increased levels of the stress hormone, other organs and systems are affected, resulting in a dramatic decline in the immune system and an increase in inflammatory processes, including in the brain. A study by the University of Ferrara, following a sample of 13 patients with depression for ten years, found an 86 percent increase in cancer mortality compared to the general population.
