A silent massacre, an absurd waste: all done before our eyes, in complete illegality. In Sardinia, the mutilation of dolphins is increasingly common, to produce the famous mosciame, a fillet of dried meat sold illegally for over €200 a kilo.
MUTILATED DOLPHINS
Dolphin mutilation occurs in hidden locations, where the fish are filleted and the mussels are removed. When only the skeleton remains, the whale is either thrown into the sea or abandoned on the beach. This is how several dolphin carcasses have been found. First, in the beautiful La Scaletta Siniscola cove, with revealing images posted on the Facebook page of the Duemari veterinary clinic. Then, repeatedly, in the Gulf of Orosei, in the province of Nuoro.
MOSCIAME SALE PROHIBITED
Mosciame, or dolphin fillet, is a food product whose sale is prohibited by a law dating back to May 3, 1989. Despite this, the mosciame trade is very thriving, partly because dolphin fillet is part of the culinary tradition of Liguria and Sardinia. Indeed, the word derives from the Ligurian dialect "muscio," meaning a person with picky tastes. Besides making an illegal purchase, anyone who buys mosciame is also doing something very dangerous. Dolphin meat contains mercury, and in significant quantities at that. This makes it absolutely inadvisable to serve.
