Many major brands in the cosmetics and personal hygiene products industry continue to play it safe, ignoring the European Regulation (2021/1902), dating back to March 2022, which prohibits the use of lilial, also known as Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), a substance considered reprotoxic (capable of negatively interfering with reproduction) and genotoxic.
Lilial is a chemical fragrance widely used in the cosmetics industry, as well as in perfumes, creams, and detergents, to give products a scent similar to that of flowers such as cyclamen and lily of the valley. Its impact is twofold: on the environment and on human health. First, from an environmental standpoint, its genotoxic effect, capable of altering genes, affects aquatic organisms. As for human health, lilial is harmful to the fetus and reproductive system, produces an allergenic effect on the skin, and is classified as a "CMR substance" (the group of substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic).
The European regulation is continually flouted for two reasons. First, companies still have large stocks of lilial to dispose of before it is outlawed; second, not all have been able to find non-toxic alternatives capable of providing the noticeable appearance so welcome to consumers. The result is a constant stream of reports and seizures by the Guardia di Finanza, which then, in turn, updates RAPEX, the EU's rapid information system for consumer protection, for products that do not comply with European standards.
