How to clean books affected by humidity

The natural solution: baking soda and a few dried bay leaves. But be very gentle.

book covers

Books are among the main victims of humidity in the home. Covers and pages are attacked, and in addition to mold, small insects, silverfish, appear, damaging the texts. What to do? There's a very simple procedure for removing mold from books, starting with the sodium bicarbonate.

Necessary

  • a few tablespoons of baking soda
  • a few leaves of laurel dried

Method

  • Place the damaged books in a bag with a spoonful of baking soda.
  • Leave them in this position for about ten days. And shake them every now and then.
  • Then dust with a brush.
  • Place bay leaves dried as a bookmark and against silverfish that do not like the smell of laurel.
  • Leave the bay leaves as bookmarks to protect your texts.

If the moisture attack is only in its initial stages, we recommend acting quickly but more simply. With this method:

  • Open the book gently and separate the pages slightly to circulate the air.
  • Place the book vertically with the pages slightly open.
  • Use a fan or air conditioning at a distance, avoiding direct heat (such as radiators or hair dryers) which can warp the paper.
