How not to waste the food you bring to the beach

First of all, don't overdo the portions. Then, choose foods that keep warm and take home the leftovers.

Circa 1 in 3 Italians (27–29%) They bring a lunch from home and eat it on the beach under an umbrella. Even those who own a small boat are accustomed to bringing ready-made meals from home. The risk of wasting them is extremely high. According to some field surveys, almost 20 percent of the food brought from home to the beach, such as for a picnic, ends up in the garbage.

How can we avoid this waste? The solutions are very simple and all very effective.

  • Small portions

You don't go to the beach to eat, and it's not even the right time to do so. So, in any case, we're talking about a light lunch, with small, measured portions. Less food is better, but you'll definitely have leftovers that won't keep well in the sun.

  • Choose foods that can handle the heat

The most suitable foods for a picnic at the seaside they are:

  • simple sandwiches (ham, aged cheese, grilled vegetables)
  • whole fruit (apples, peaches, grapes)
  • dried fruit and dry snacks
    The least suitable foods are:
  • mayonnaise, creams, raw fish, fresh dairy products without refrigeration

  • Use a real cooler bag
With popsicles or frozen bottles. It keeps food safe and prevents it from spoiling before you even eat it.

  • Prepare everything already portioned
Cut and pack before leaving. Like this:
  • don't leave any "large pieces"
  • don't touch food with sandy hands
  • reduce waste

  • Avoid bringing too much "random" food
Better 2–3 well thought out things than a bag full of potential leftovers.

Reuse leftovers immediately

If something comes home still good:

  • turn it into a light dinner
  • or freeze it within a few hours of getting home.
