How to wear slingbacks

The most popular styles. Which look to choose based on the circumstances, and the mistakes to avoid.

Slingbacks

Le slingbacks They are a type of women's shoe characterised by two fundamental elements: the toe (which can be closed, open or almond-shaped) and the strap that passes behind the heel instead of completely wrapping around the foot.

Essentially, instead of having the classic closed heel of a traditional pump, slingbacks leave the back of the foot exposed and hold it in place with an elastic or adjustable strap. This makes them lighter and often more comfortable, especially in the spring and summer months.

There are various models of slingbacks, and they change a lot based on heel, toe and style.

  • High heel slingbacks: the most elegant, often for formal occasions or evenings.
  • Medium heel slingback (kitten heel): very comfortable and super chic, ideal for every day.
  • Low or flat slingbacks: perfect for walking a lot, but still refined.
  • Tapered tip: more elegant and slim.
  • Round or square tip: more modern and casual.
  • With thin or elastic strap: the detail changes the final effect a lot (more delicate or more sporty).

If it's your first time using them, start with a template nude or black with medium heel: it is the easiest to match and the one that “saves” almost every outfit.

As for the look, it changes based on the circumstances in which they are worn.
  • Elegant / office look:
Black or nude slingbacks + cigarette trousers or suit. They are a lighter alternative to classic pumps.
  • Casual chic look:
With straight or cropped jeans and a white shirt or simple sweater. They work well because they instantly elevate the look without being too formal.
  • Summer look / refined:
With midi dresses or flowing skirts. Perfect with lightweight fabrics (linen, silk, cotton).
  • Evening look:
Models with thin heels or jewel details, paired with more elegant dresses.
The best pairings are:
  • With cropped or ankle-length trousers: the strap is visible and makes the leg look longer.
  • With midi dresses or skirts: they give an elegant and light effect.
  • With straight or slightly cropped jeans: casual but elegant look.

Instead, avoid making the most common mistakes: a strap that's too loose and lets your shoe slip out while walking; pants that are too long and cover everything; and a heel that's too high and you're not used to wearing.
