An open-plan living area is a necessity when space is limited and needs to be maximized, rather than wasted. However, it can also be an architectural solution focused on space, light, and conviviality. An open-plan space, in any case, offers precisely these advantages: it increases the brightness of the entire apartment, not only the available space, but also functionality and the ability to feel at ease with the people who live and frequent the home. Simply put, by eliminating walls and doors, the space appears larger and more airy, even if the actual square footage remains the same.

But to create an open space in the living area, regardless of any project, there are some rules, some of which are simple to follow.

The walls to be torn down

If it is a question of non-load-bearing walls, can be removed to create a single environment and no permission is required. If instead the walls are load-bearing or structural They cannot be freely eliminated; technical checks and a project are required. In any case, the position of electrical, plumbing and drainage systems: in theory, anything is possible with a good renovation project, but in practice, moving them can have a significant impact on the budget.

Visual separations

A functional open space isn't a single, unidentified room. You can separate the spaces with visual effects and a few subtle touches:

  • Kitchen: with island or peninsula, change of flooring, dedicated lighting.
  • Lunch area: with a table near the kitchen, or even with a central hanging lamp.
  • Stay: with a sofa, a rug, a bookcase or a low cabinet as a dividing element.

As for the flooring, it is best to try to make it as uniform as possible throughout the open space area.

Lightweight elements instead of walls

Once you've eliminated one or more walls, simply use a few lightweight elements to recreate a sense of separation within the open space, making it more functional and welcoming. The key is: separate without closing.

These are the most effective alternatives:

  • Kitchen island with snack top.
  • Library double-sided.
  • Internal glass windows in iron and glass, or even mirrors that still expand the spaces.
  • Sofa positioned “in the centre of the room”.
  • Sliding panels or curtains for flexible separation.

Light and paths

The light points and paths inside the house become fundamental when you decide to create an open space in the living area.

  • Keep a clear path between the entrance, kitchen, and windows, otherwise the house loses depth and even style.
  • Use consistent colors between the kitchen and living room to create continuity.
  • Plan for multiple lighting points: spotlights, pendant lamps over the table, indirect lighting in the living room.

Finally, don't underestimate some practical aspects. A kitchen within an open-plan space that encompasses the entire living area must be designed to avoid producing excessive unpleasant odors. An extractor hood, for example, may be essential.
