Tulips are beautiful flowers, but once opened, they don't last long. Yet, there are excellent, simple, and effective natural remedies to extend their life. As for the plants, the problem is that the flush of color that comes with flowering fades just as quickly. What to do? Here are some effective remedies.

Choose and mix different varieties

Tulips do not all bloom at the same time: some varieties bloom presto, others to mid-season, others belatedly.

  • Precocious: 'Apricot Beauty', 'Red Emperor'
  • Mid-season: 'Pink Impression', 'Queen of Night'
  • Late: 'Parrot Tulip', 'Angelique'
This way, you can create groups of tulips of the same color, but of different varieties, with blooms that will last much longer. Consider that there can be more than a month between early and late tulips.
  • Water the plants little and often

Plants should be watered at the base consistently, but with small amounts. Keep the soil moist while avoiding waterlogging: this will prolong flowering.
  • Plant deeply

You can create a "lasagna" of bulbs, even just tulips, arranged in different layers. The deeper layers, for larger bulbs, should emerge from the soil and flower later, as deeper layers correspond to lower temperatures.

Tulips in vases

If you have fresh tulips purchased or cut from the garden and want to make the flowers last longer:

  • Cut the stem: before putting them in water, about 1–2 centimeters, diagonallyThis increases the absorbent surface area.
  • Fresh waterUse cold, clean water. Tulips like cold water, not hot.
  • Check the water: Change the water every 1–2 days to avoid bacteria.
  • Do not expose flowers to direct sunlight or heat: Cool temperatures help flowers last longer.
  • Long stem supportTulips continue to grow even in pots, so choose a tall, narrow pot that will support them.
  • Avoid fruit near the vase: Ethylene gas from ripe fruit accelerates wilting.

The average lifespan of tulip flowers indoors, with these tips, can even exceed 10.12 days.
