Male chicks are the victims of great waste within the egg industry. They are killed for economic and production reasons.
Hens raised to produce eggs (called “layers”) have been genetically selected to lay lots of eggs, but:
- i males do not lay eggs, obviously
- they are not suitable for meat, because they grow slowly and produce little meat compared to broiler chickens
This means that breeding males would be uneconomicIt would cost more to feed them than the profit they would generate. Hence the massacre: male chicks are killed by gassing or, even worse, by mechanical shredding. Conversely, some manage to avoid the massacre. After the egg hatches, even if the chicks are male, they are not killed. And as soon as they grow and start chasing the hens, they are placed in a dedicated space, at a safe distance from the hens.
