The dahlia, whose original name is dahlia It belongs to the Astreraceae family and is native to Mexico, although it then spread throughout Latin America, even reaching Europe and Italy. The leaves are large and green, and the flowers bloom at the tips of long, symmetrical stems: they can be single, double, ball-shaped, pompom-shaped, or daisy-shaped. The plant is easy to grow both in the garden and in a pot.

Exposure and climate

Dahlias are rather delicate plants and require more attention than other plants. They prefer mild climates and suffer from frost, so they must be placed in full sun. The plant needs at least 6–8 hours of direct light per day,  but in the hottest hours it may appreciate a little light afternoon shade, especially for varieties with large flowers. It tolerates heat well, even 30 degrees, but is sensitive to frost, and temperatures below freezing can cause irreparable damage to the tubers.

Land

Dahlia prefers fresh, deep and rich soil. organic substances It must be fertilized periodically. Pruning is important when caring for a dahlia: in particular, the flower heads should be cut at the base of the stem to encourage full bloom of the remaining buds. The ideal pH is slightly acidic or neutral, between 6 and 7.

Position of plants

Once chosen Plot And with the right exposure, to grow dahlias properly in open ground, it's important to plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. The spacing between bulbs varies depending on the variety. If it's a tall dahlia, the spacing should be between 80 and 120 centimeters; for medium-sized plants, a distance of 50 to 80 centimeters is sufficient; for dwarf plants, between 30 and 40 centimeters.

Cultivation in pots

To grow dahlias in a jar, it is preferable to choose the smaller varieties. The pot, or the box, must have a depth of at least 30 centimeters and a width of at least 20 centimeters. Even in a pot, dahlias must have well-drained soil and exposure to sunlight: it's a good idea to place expanded clay on the bottom of the container. During the winter, if your dahlias are in an area with very cold temperatures, it's best to cut the tubers and remove them before the end of autumn, placing them in a paper container after thoroughly cleaning and drying them. The bulbs should be stored in a dark, dry place and then repotted in early spring. An alternative is to plant dahlia plants in pots indoors, in a well-sheltered location.

Watering

The dahlia problem revolves around water. The plant needs a lot of it, especially during the initial growth phase and during flowering, but you have to be careful: the soil must always be kept dry, otherwise the dahlia tubers will be damaged.

Semina

Dahlias can be propagated both by seed and by dividing the tubers in spring. Finally, they can be propagated by cuttings, and the ideal time for this is summer.

Flowering

Flowering occurs in summer and continues until autumn. Interestingly, dahlias produce continuous, progressive blooms; each stem can produce multiple buds over time, and if properly cared for, the plant will produce flowers continuously for months.

Dahlia varieties

Among the many varieties of dahlias, the most beautiful are:
