Among the many fake news stories circulating about coffee, which lead us to waste it, one concerns the characteristics of caffè lungo compared to espresso: many people think it's lighter. The exact opposite is true.
Long coffee is brewed longer and with more water, so it can extract more caffeine from the beans than a traditional espresso. Thus, long coffee contains more total caffeine than espresso (it can reach 90–120 mg versus 60–80 mg for espresso).
Without prejudice to the benefits In general, the misunderstanding about the characteristics of a lungo compared to an espresso stems from the intensity of its flavor. Espresso is more concentrated, fuller-bodied, and perceived as "stronger" on the palate. Lungo, on the other hand, contains more water and is more diluted and has a more delicate flavor.
Long coffee is preferable in these circumstances:
- Morning or long days, when you want to maintain constant attention.
- During prolonged study or work, because you drink it more slowly.
- If espresso seems too “strong” for your immediate impact, even at the sensational level.
Long coffee should be avoided if:
- You are sensitive to caffeine (anxiety, palpitations): taking a long dose may give a longer lasting effect.
- You have reflux or sensitive stomach, because longer extraction can increase some bitter and acidic substances.
- If you want a quick and short-term effect, espresso is better.
