BeadRoots is a startup that has developed a solution to help farmers cope with drought. The key to this innovation lies in natural, superabsorbent polymers that allow plants to retain more water in their roots, thus improving crop yields and the quality of their produce, even under water-stressed conditions.
The BeadRoots team is made up of experts in biotechnology, tissue engineering, and business strategy, who have combined their expertise to create an eco-sustainable, effective, and innovative solution. Angela Bonato, a biotechnologist specializing in tissue and polymer engineering with a PhD from ETH Zurich, is the group's technical expert. Valerio de Luca, a business strategist with a PhD in Innovation Engineering and an MBA from ESCP Europe, as well as a professor of Business Administration, brings the strategic vision needed to develop and implement the business model. Finally, Paolo Pezzolla is the water retention specialist, the core of BeadRoots' technology.
How the project works
BeadRoots' solution is based on natural polymers that retain water in the soil, making it available to plants during times of drought. These polymers are completely biodegradable and eco-friendly, as they are derived from natural materials without the addition of synthetic precursors. In other words, BeadRoots products leave no trace in the soil, respecting the environment and helping maintain soil fertility.
When these polymers are added to the soil, they absorb and retain water, which is then slowly released to benefit plant roots. This allows crops to survive better even during periods of water scarcity, increasing their resistance to drought. Furthermore, once the polymers degrade, they are converted into plant nutrients, promoting faster and healthier growth.
