Free sanitary pads in Italy: where to find them

Universities, schools, and some municipalities. Local projects are multiplying, but a nationwide intervention is needed.

free sanitary pads for women

In France, Scotland, and New Zealand, as well as in some American states, laws exist that allow poor women and students to access free sanitary pads. And in Italy? In recent years, this phenomenon has also been noted in our country, where local initiatives are multiplying, but a national measure is still lacking. Furthermore, a 2020 European Union survey calculated that within the alliance's member countries, one in ten women cannot afford essential sanitary products, especially sanitary pads.

But let's look at the most interesting initiatives in Italy for the free distribution of sanitary towels:

  • Rome

In 2021, the capital launched a pilot project in several schools and shelters to distribute free sanitary pads to women and girls in financial difficulty. The initiative was well received, and similar projects are also being implemented in some high schools, such as Virgilio.

  • Bastia Umbra

Still in the school context, the municipal administration of the Umbrian town, upon proposal of the Department of Municipal Pharmacies, has approved an innovative project for the free distribution of sanitary towels at the “Colomba Antonietti” Middle School.

  • Milan

The Lombardy capital has also activated a series of free sanitary pad distribution points, primarily for homeless women and families in need. This initiative is part of a broader program to support vulnerable people. Also in Milan, sanitary pads are available free of charge at the University of Milan and the Parini High School.

  • Turin

It is certainly one of the most active cities in terms of free sanitary pads: they are distributed through social services, in some schools, and at the University of the Piedmont capital. Also in this region, the municipal administration of Nichelino has decided to guarantee the distribution of free sanitary pads in 35 public buildings, including schools.
