Listening to the sounds of the sea reduces stress and anxiety.

The brain shifts to lower frequencies, associated with relaxation and well-being. Even the sight of the horizon drives away negative thoughts.

Listening to the sounds of the sea is never a waste of time, and it's good for your health, first and foremost because it reduces stress and anxiety with a natural therapy and no side effects.

The sound of the sea (waves, surf, constant and regular noise) is one of the so-called relaxing natural soundsSeveral studies in psychology and neuroscience have observed that these sounds can:

  • reduce activation of the sympathetic nervous system (the one linked to stress and “alert mode”)
  • promote a state of physiological relaxation (slower breathing, lower heart rate), and thus reduce stress. and anxiety.
  • improve the concentration and mental recovery after cognitive effort
The phenomenon of the sound of the sea eliminating stress and anxiety can be traced back to the Blue Mind Theory, proposed by marine biologist and researcher Wallace J. Nichols in his book Blue Mind, which describes the regenerative effects of water on the human brain.
Here are the main reasons why the sound of the sea is a powerful stress reliever:
  • Brainwave Synchronization: The rhythmic, steady sound of the waves induces the brain to shift from “Beta” frequencies (associated with alertness and stress) to lower frequencies, such as Alpha and Theta waves, typical of states of deep relaxation and meditation.
  • Reduces mental chatter: The white noise of the ocean (a constant, harmonious frequency) helps turn off the mind's autopilot, reducing incessant internal dialogue and calming activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for planning and worrying.
  • Lowering Cortisol: The marine environment, both visually and acoustically, helps lower cortisol levels, known as the stress hormone.
  • Effect of negative ions: Sea air is rich in negative ions (oxygen atoms with extra electrons), which not only improve breathing but can also increase serotonin production, promoting a good mood and reducing anxiety.
  • Meditative and visual effect: the view of the broad horizon and the cyclical movement of the water stimulate introspection and awareness, driving away negative thoughts.

A revision of a series of scientific studies, carried out in 2021, demonstrates unequivocally that natural sounds (first and foremost that of the sea) are perceived as pleasant, relaxing and potentially regenerative, contributing to psychological well-being. The main reason is quite simple: the brain tends to perceive sounds regular, predictable and without sudden peaks as less threatening. Sea waves have precisely these characteristics.

Furthermore, the sound of the sea works a bit like a natural form of “sound masking”: It covers sudden urban noises that can keep the brain alert. And it translates into one of the best natural therapies against the damage ofnoise pollution.
