Two young people invented an app to monitor climate change with beehives. And save the bees.

Controlling climate change through beehives . With this simple yet effective idea, two students from Arco, in the province of Trento, both born in 1999, Samuele Dassatti and Andrea Zanin , created an innovative app capable of winning awards and attracting the attention of a giant like Microsoft. Specifically, the application developed by these two students from the University of Trento aims to help mountain beekeepers monitor the environmental conditions of their hives , thus also being able to monitor the health of the bees. A noble intention not only for the protection of this species but, more generally, for monitoring the entire surrounding environment.

APP TO SAVE BEEHIVES

Bees , in fact, are essential to our ecosystem , serving as a true thermometer of the conditions of the environment we live in. It's no coincidence that in times of global warming and uncontrolled use of pesticides, their numbers are continually declining. This trend absolutely needs to be reversed, and 'Beehave,' the name of the app developed by Dassatti and Zanin, is a step in this direction. The goal is to monitor the health of bees and hives in real time, so they can be protected as effectively as possible and in a timely manner.

CLIMATE CHANGE API

The idea to develop this app stems from a series of favorable factors, which highlight the particularly virtuous educational model of Trentino . The two students from Arco are only in their first year of university, but nevertheless, they placed second with their app in the European competition launched by the European Commission's annual forum on the Alpine macro-region strategy (Eusalp) , held in Innsbruck. This is a remarkable achievement, and they were prepared for it thanks to an educational program that provided them with all the tools they needed to take off.

BEEHAVE

Specifically, the two students attended an innovative high school , Maffei in Riva del Garda, where they were given a trial tablet and a particularly effective work-study program. The students, who have always been passionate about video games and PCs, gained experience at Witlab , a laboratory and incubator in Rovereto founded by Emanuele Rocco, a physicist with a PhD from Harvard. Within this facility, they had access to the time and tools needed to develop their projects. This fruitful work , which Samuele and Andrea capitalized on the following year by submitting a business plan that impressed the Innsbruck jury. What's more, Samuele, who in the previous months had already developed 'Fluently,' an app for managing school diaries from a tablet, has already been invited to Seattle several times by Microsoft to follow up on his ideas.
