Italian cemeteries, especially in large cities, are in chaos, and it can be very difficult to reach the grave you want to visit, but technology has enabled a quick and easy way to circumvent the problem. The app Aldilapp It works as a kind of cemetery navigator: use a combination of digital burial database + GPS geolocation + maps to guide you to the tomb you are seeking.
The operation takes place in several phases.
Before the app can work, the The municipality or the cemetery manager must join the service.
Specialized technicians make a digital census:
- they map the entire cemetery
- they record field, pavilion, row and grave number
- associate geographic coordinates at every burial
This data is saved in a database and linked to the cemetery map.
The search for the tomb
Once your municipality has joined the service, you can search for:
- name and surname
- sometimes too the municipality or the cemetery
The system finds the deceased's card and displays it the exact location of the tomb on the interactive map.
Once you have found the position:
- the app shows the internal map of the cemetery
- or open GPS navigation with Google Maps
- guides you to the exact burial site
In practice it works like a road navigator but inside the cemetery.
In addition to location, the app can also offer:
- biography and photo of the deceased
- messages or dedications from family members
- ignition of virtual candles
- sending flowers or requesting cleaning the tombstone at a distance.
Enrico Massi is to rely onItalian entrepreneur who created and founded the Aldilapp app, now used in hundreds of Italian municipalities. Although at the beginning of 2026 the app was the subject of a model intervention Privacy Guarantor which imposed sanctions and changes to bring the management of users' personal data and the digital profiles of the deceased into line with current regulations.
The investigation revealed that using a single platform to offer both institutional services and social and commercial services—inextricably linked—presents several critical issues. It involves processing personal data beyond the sole institutional purposes and may create a legitimate expectation among users that all processing is attributable to the Municipalities. Further critical issues concern the regulation of relationships between the parties involved, the lack of transparency towards users, and the inadequacy of certain technical and organizational measures.
The Guarantor has therefore ordered the strengthening of security measures, the clear separation between institutional services and those of a "social" and commercial nature, as well as the deletion of "digital profiles" automatically created by municipal databases and the interactions associated with them.
These services may be provided by Stup upon user request and without using the cemetery databases made available by the Municipalities exclusively for the provision of information on the location of the deceased in their cemeteries.
Given the innovative nature of the service, the lack of complaints, and the cooperation provided during the investigation, the Authority imposed modest administrative fines: €6 on Stup; €3 on the Municipality of Ancona; €2 on the Municipality of Velletri; and €2.500 on the cemetery managers.
