Who knows, probably their dream is to celebrate 100 years of married lifeMeanwhile, Mario and Antonina, together as husband and wife, have come a long way and have reached the milestone of 84 years of living under the same roof. A Guinness World Record-breaking marriage, the longest in Europe. The couple is from Catenanuova, in the province of Enna, where Mario Calì (103 years old) and Antonina Ardilio (99 years old) were married on November 19, 1931. He was 18, she was 15: the two had five children, four girls and one boy: Tina, born in 1932, Mimma in 1937, Nino in 1941, Maria in 1944, and Pinuccia in 1947.
Mario and Antonina's married life was never easy, primarily for financial reasons. Immediately after their wedding, Mario took on any job to bring home money: farmhand, laborer, and "jurnataru," and so on. In 1936, the couple moved to Augusta, and toward the end of World War II, in 1945, they returned to Catenanuova. With their five children, they remained in Catenanuova for another seven years, before returning to Augusta in 1952. Finally, over the years, Mario managed to secure stable work at a cement factory in Syracuse, and so their family was able to grow and prosper. Today, Mario and Antonina live with their youngest daughter, Pinuccia, and together they enjoy their large family, including 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
