Aci Bonaccorsi: the most virtuous municipality in Italy. Record waste separation and a dog-only playground.

We're in Sicily, but it feels like Switzerland. The manufacturing rate isn't even 1 percent. And as for water...

Aci Bonaccorsi

La collection exceeds 80 percent. The manufacturing rate, relative to the territory, does not reach 1 percent. All public offices are illuminated through photovoltaic systems.

ACI BONACCORSI, THE MOST VIRTUOUS MUNICIPALITY IN ITALY

With these premises Aci Bonaccorsi, a small town in the province of Catania, has become the most virtuous municipality in Italy. And since it's a Sicilian town, they also call it “Etna Switzerland”There is nothing miraculous in this story, but simply good municipal and territorial administration, like so many others found throughout Italy.

Other factors that have led to this record include the cycle/pedestrian path, the longest in Sicily in proportion to the resident population (Aci Bonaccorsi has 3.600 inhabitants), and the abundance of green areas, including a playground exclusively for dogs.

A final peculiarity of this small town concerns the political longevity of its mayor. Vito Di Mauro has served in the administration for 34 years: mayor, councilor, president of the city council, and simply councilor. Of course, this isn't a good sign of turnover. But it's also proof of how much the citizens of Aci Bonaccorsi appreciate the work of their mayor, who is capable of taking care of even the smallest details. Speaking of sustainability and... water wasteDi Mauro has issued all residents of Aci Bonaccorsi a card that entitles them to 40 liters of water—20 still and 20 sparkling—per week, free of charge. It may not seem like much, but it's a lot in a region where the mayor's water often doesn't even reach homes.
