Origins

Its origins date back to the times of the Ancient Romans when the Rottweiler was mainly used as a sheepdog and guard dog. It often accompanied the Roman legions on their journeys across the Alps and it is precisely from the Rottweil region, in Germany, which derives its name from the crossbreeding of the breed with local dogs here. Official recognition, however, did not arrive until 1910.

History

During the Middle Ages, with thecross with the local German Shepherd, this breed gave rise to the so-called Rottweiler Metzgerhund, or “the Rottweil butcher’s dog.” A name that derived from the fact that these dogs were used by butchers to lead cattle to the slaughterhouse.

Appearance

Short-haired dog, divided into undercoat and surface hair, has a black coat with reddish-brown markings in some areas of the body. It turns out massif, well-proportioned, with broad jaws and well-developed muscles. The eyes are medium-sized, the nose is black, the ears are triangular and pendant. Its size varies depending on whether it is male or female specimens but also depending on the different sizes of the dog, small, medium, large or very large. If small-sized Rottweilers measure around 61 cm (males) and 56 cm (females), the very large ones can reach up to 68 cm (males) and 64 cm (females).

Character
