Origins

Originally from Romania, crossed with the wolf, the Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin It was definitively recognized in 2015, although the first standard dates back to 1934 by the National Institute of Zootechnics. The standard was subsequently modified and updated in 1982, 1999, and 2001 by the Asociaţia Chinologică Română.

In 2002, the A.Ch.R. Technical Commission adapted the standard according to the model proposed by the International Kennel Federation. In 2005, the Romanian Carpathian Shepherd was also recognized by the International Kennel Federation and the ENCI.

The name, Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin, refers to its place of origin, the Carpathians, where the breed, for centuries, was used by shepherds to guard their flocks, also protecting them from dangerous animals such as the Lupo, the lynx, the bear.

Appearance

This is a large, molosser-type dog with a strong, vigorous, and imposing appearance. It is hardy, energetic, and also very agile.

Here are some of its main physical characteristics:

  • The height at the withers of males is between 65 and 73 cm while that of females is between 59-67 cm.
  • The coat is short on the head and front of the limbs, while it is long on the rest of the body. The coat is dark brown or sandy in color with varying shades; it may also have white patches, preferably not too large.

Character

Having been born as a sheepdog and guard dog, the Romanian Shepherd has a fearless character, in fact it is used to protect flocks even from dangerous animals such as wolves and bears.

At the same time, he can be very calm and even-tempered. He's not very open to strangers, but he's decidedly affectionate with children. Loyal and protective, he adapts well to family life, but it's important that he be able to spend plenty of time outdoors.

Cure

This is a healthy, strong, and resilient dog. It requires plenty of exercise and long walks outdoors; it's definitely not an apartment dog. Although it's generally healthy, be careful because it can suffer from hip dysplasia.

The term Romanian Shepherd actually refers to multiple breeds of Romanian origin, which are the following:

  • Myoritic Sheepdog (Ciobănesc Românesc Mioritic), a large dog of ancient origins, bred to guard livestock. Its coat is wiry and requires considerable grooming. It has a calm and even temperament, and is affectionate and loyal.
  • Romanian Shepherd Dog from Bucovina (Ciobănesc românesc de Bucovina), large, robust dog originally from Bucovina, a Carpathian region, bred to guard livestock.
  • Romanian Carpathian Shepherd (Ciobănesc Românesc Carpatin), large dog originally from the Carpathian Mountains, bred to guide and protect flocks, courageous, calm and balanced.
  • Romanian Shepherd Raven (Ciobănesc Românesc Corb), a dog nicknamed “crow” because of its black fur, courageous and proud, also bred to protect livestock.
