Every year, more and more municipal administrations are introducing bans on New Year's Eve fireworks and fireworks displays for reasons of public safety, animal welfare, and pollution reduction, and so currently there are approximately one thousand municipalities where they are prohibited. But common sense comes before laws and regulations, and if you absolutely can't give up a tradition that every year results in several deaths and numerous injuries, at least follow these basic precautions to avoid wasting your celebrations.
- Choose only legal products: the label must include the ministerial decree number authorizing their sale, the product name, the manufacturer, the category, and the instructions for use that must be followed carefully.
- Purchase fireworks only from authorized shops, never from stalls that don't display the specific license to sell this type of product.
- Light them outdoors and move away when the fuse is lit.
- Keep fireworks away from your body. Also, when setting off any fireworks, be careful not to let off any animals nearby. They also deserve your respect and attention.
- Avoid setting off New Year's Eve fireworks where there are animals: they suffer a lot.
- Light one fire at a time and avoid having other fires nearby when you light one.
- Never wear fleece or synthetic jackets or sweaters, or acetate clothing such as tracksuits, when turning on the heater.
- Never pick up abandoned firecrackers and advise children never to do so.
- Never let children light them.
- Avoid purchasing overly sophisticated or even homemade fireworks: these are best left to expert fireworkers.
- If a bang hasn't gone off, don't try to relight it, and don't get too close to it to avoid possible accidents. Try submerging it in a bucket of water or covering it with sand.
- Store fires in a dry, cool, and well-protected place. And, above all, keep them at a safe distance from children.
