Montale Ecovillage: a completely sustainable mini-neighborhood

In Rangone, in the province of Modena, homes run entirely on solar energy, have zero emissions, and are supplied with recycled rainwater.

Montale Ecovillage: Eco-friendly apartments

The Ecovillage of Montale Rangone is a systemically designed residential eco-neighborhood, not only as a single “green” building.

These are the distinctive elements:

  • standard buildings nZEB (nearly zero energy)
  • widespread use of renewable energy and sustainable materials
  • integration between urban planning, greenery, water and sustainable mobility
  • strong component of urban reforestation and measured ecosystem benefits
  • design oriented to well-being and the local microclimate

A water park has been built in the center of the village, which, thanks to the surrounding poplars, can drain water during the frequent and heavy rains here. All apartments have systems to avoid waste of water, specifically through two systems. Rainwater is collected and stored in tanks located in the basements of buildings. And in every home, the faucets are equipped with a flow reducer, reducing consumption and water waste.

In 2025, one of the buildings in Montale Park achieved ZEB (Zero Energy Building) standards, consuming approximately 1 kWh/m² annually. For comparison, a traditional class G home consumes between 330 and 400 kWh/m² annually. This means that a ZEB building consumes over 300 times less energy than an older building.

Ecovillage houses are not cheap: prices start from around 4 thousand euros per square meter. On the other hand, the amenities don't just concern energy supplies and construction materials. The neighborhood has white cycle and pedestrian paths, designed to avoid overheating during the summer and thus prevent heat islands.
