Trees on the Thames: London gets the green light for the Garden Bridge, Europe's greenest bridge.

It will be a veritable green park suspended over the waters of the river that flows through London. Seven million visitors are expected each year. But some say the project is unnecessary.

London Garden Bridge, Thames Garden Bridge

GARDEN BRIDGE OVER THE THAMES IN LONDON –

It will be a challenge between London and New York. In a few years we will see a comparison between the High Line park, on a piece of former railway line, in New York and the one suspended over the Thames, the Garden Bridge in LondonIn the English capital, the project has been definitively approved by the municipal administration and Mayor Boris Johnson has already defined it as "a bridge with no other purpose than to recreate the soul".

GARDEN BRIDGE LONDON –

The bridge will be a giant walkway of trees and flowers, 367 meters long and entirely suspended over the Thames and with a total surface area of 6.000 square meters. 270 spaces are already planned inside trees plus shrubs, climbers, borders and flowers, for a total cost of £175 million, partly donated by private individuals in the form of sponsorships to the Garden Bridge Trust and partly (£60 million) from public funds.

The copper-coated concrete structure will also be very delicate and will not be able to accommodate more than 2.500 people at a time, which is why access will be limited and the bridge will be closed from midnight to 6 a.m. This new urban planning challenge in London is already shaping up to be a future monument for the city, so much so that the budget for managing the Garden Bridge in London has been prepared with an eye on 7 million visitors a year. Despite all this, there is no shortage of controversy, especially from citizens' committees who consider the project a huge waste and an extravagant Disney-esque project. Furthermore, in that same area, between Temple and South Bank, the two banks of the Thames, there are already three bridges. And a fourth was probably unnecessary.
