LET'S ORANGE
Yousuf He fled Senegal at the age of 16, after being entrusted to a shaman who beat him and forced him to beg on the streets of Dakar. Gordon, Instead, he left Ghana at the age of 15 because some traffickers They had promised him that once in Italy he would play in a professional football team to give free rein to his talent. Gordon and Yousuf in our country, however, they ended up in the tent city of Rosarno, in the province of Reggio Calabria, inside shacks made of asbestos and plastic. To survive, like many others, they collect oranges in the area for a few cents. An activity where gangmastering and exploitation are rampant, with the State standing by and watching. For this reason, a truly laudable initiative has taken hold that allows the adoption of a fruit tree, specifically a citrus fruit, (oranges, lemons o tangerines). It is a simple, very simple gesture, but with a very powerful value. In fact, it avoids the waste of abandoned lands, it rebuilds a fundamental agricultural fabric in some areas of the country, it concretely fights against gangmasters, offering job opportunities to migrated.
LET'S ORANGE: HOW IT WORKS
The most interesting project on the subject is the one you can find on the website aranciamoci.it, organized by the volunteer association Greenland which helps the young residents of the tent city in Rosarno, in the province of Reggio Calabria. How does it work? It's very simple.: with an annual fee of 90 euros you can adopt an orange, mandarin or lemon tree from a distance. You get an adoption certificate, with images of the plant received. But that's not all. You also get 60 kilograms of citrus fruits in 15 or 25 kilo boxes.

With the proceeds of the initiative, the Association's volunteers are thus able to recover cultivation soils abandoned in the area, and to offer clean, non-illegal work to the immigrants who find themselves in the San Ferdinando refugee camp.
Think about it for a moment: in one fell swoop you save a tree, give work against the caporalato, and offer real development opportunities in an area that has enormous agricultural and tourist potential, almost always wasted and to the exclusive advantage of the criminal gangs in the area.
