Chinese Internet addicts go to re-education centers

Across the country, 250 camps have been opened to help millions of young people overcome internet addiction. In some cases, the judiciary has intervened due to the violence used by the rehabilitation workers.

INTERNET ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTERS –

A regime is a regime, even when it comes to curing a mass disease. In China, there are at least 24 million young people addicted to the Internet : for them, the web is likely the realm of dreams, of modernity, of the future. They range in age from 13 to 20, and spend entire days glued to the screen, neglecting their studies to play online.

REHABILITATION CENTERS IN CHINA –

To treat them, the Beijing government's Department of Health has chosen a hard line . Very hard. They have opened actual rehabilitation centers , with the vague name of "Base for the Psychological Development of Adolescents." Places where the kids perform a sort of "civil and social service," with a series of jobs, even the most menial, to get back to normal life . There are now 250 places in total across the country. With peaks of criminal offenses: the center in Nanning, for example, was closed and 13 people were arrested. The kids were often raped and beaten.
