What to do with expired spices

Don't throw them in the trash: they can be used to clean carpets or perfume laundry. But you can also use them to paint with the kids, and they'll have a lot of fun.

How to use expired spices: home, garden, and vegetable recycling ideas.
The so-called expired spices, as they have passed the date by which it would have been preferable to consume them, they are not dangerous at all, and in general they lose a significant percentage of aroma and potencyBut that doesn't mean they have to end up in the garbage.

How to reuse expired spices

In theory, spices don't expire. They can last for years if you follow the basic rules for their preservation: away from heat, humidity, and sunlight. In reality, over time—no more than two or three years—spices lose their distinctive flavor and no longer contribute to the specific identity of the dish in which they've been used. Once spices have lost their aromatic flavor, and we can therefore consider them expired, instead of throwing them in the trash and wasting them, we can think about reusing them. The possibilities are endless, thanks to the characteristics of spices. We can, for example, perfume laundry and carpets. Or even clean windows or perhaps protect our green spaces, vegetable gardens, gardens, and balconies from insects.

Perfume the carpets

Expired spices are perfect for scenting carpets at home: simply sprinkle the surface with small amounts of cinnamon, thyme, nutmeg, ginger , rosemary, or ground cloves, along with baking soda. Let it sit for a few minutes, then air-dry the carpet or vacuum it. Before proceeding, however, test the solution on a small corner of the carpet to ensure the spices don't cause stains.

Eliminate bad odors from laundry

But expired spices are also excellent for eliminating unpleasant odors from laundry and brightening its colors: for the first, use rosemary, for the second, black pepper. Rosemary, in particular, can also remove sweat stains: just place a sprig in the basin of water where you placed your laundry.

Also prepare small bags with your favourite spices and place them in pantries, drawers and shoe racks: they will allow you to keep away bad smells and parasites that attack food.

Clean the windows

Lemon balm leaves are perfect for making windows shine: prepare an infusion of 400 ml of water and lemon balm, let it cool, then add 200 ml of vinegar and place everything in a spray bottle.

Decorate the house

And for a simple, low-cost way to decorate your home, try reusing spices to make lots of scented DIY candles: simply add spices like cinnamon, turmeric, or ground cloves to the wax.

Garden care

Spices are also perfect for gardening, especially for protecting your yard from insects and ants: pepper, chili pepper, paprika, and mint are excellent natural repellents. Simply sprinkle dried or crumbled mint leaves on critical areas of your garden to repel ants. The same goes for cloves, hot paprika, and cinnamon sticks. If you have spices in the form of seeds (coriander, cumin, mustard, fennel), you can try sowing them in a pot.

Games for children

Finally, here's a fun idea for kids: transform expired spices into colorful watercolors. Find all the instructions here .

Body exfoliant

Expired spices are an excellent body exfoliant . Simply add them, in your favorite combination, to a body scrub, or create your own by combining the spice of your choice with extra virgin olive oil. Expired spices can be added to homemade soap, and the most suitable ones are cinnamon , rosemary, and sage , while turmeric gives the soap a yellow color.

What happens if we eat expired spices?

If we eat expired spices, we don't run any health risks. All food products, including spices, must have an expiration date . In this case, this means that after that date, their quality and effectiveness are no longer guaranteed. The problem is with flavor, not health. Generally, ground spices last a year, while whole spices last up to two.
